An article Monday about former Syracuse resident Jessica Cutler, who was fired from her U.S. Senate staff assistant job for using government computers to record entries in her Internet diary in which she described sexual trysts with Washington officials, incorrectly reported that she graduated from Syracuse University. Cutler last took classes at SU in spring 2000 and holds senior status there.

A former Syracuse University student journalist's Internet diary of sexual trysts with Washington officials has cost her a Senate job and has political insiders guessing who was who on her Web blog, called the Washingtonienne.

U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine, R-Ohio, fired staff assistant Jessica Cutler on Friday for unacceptable use of Senate computers, The Washington Post reported Sunday.

Cutler, 24, told The Washington Post the accounts she posted are true and she's not ashamed of them.

"It's so cliched. It's like "There's a slutty girl on the Hill?' There's millions of'em," she told The Washington Post. "A lot of my friends are way worse than me."

Cutler's diary identifies her partners only by their initials. She wrote that one agency chief of staff paid her $400 for sex. She told The Washington Post that the payment was more of a gift than a payment for service.

Cutler is a graduate of Nottingham High School and SU. She was a photography intern for The Post-Standard in 1998 and was photo editor of SU's Daily Orange in 1999 and 2000.

Cutler could not be reached for comment. Her father, Robert Cutler, of Ruth Avenue in Syracuse, said he had not heard about his daughter's dismissal from work and had no comment.

Other blog operators have come to Cutler's defense, preserving her archives and sending letters about free speech to their senators.

The editor of Wonkette.com told The Plain Dealer in Cleveland that she enjoyed Cutler's writing and would like to help her get a literary agent.

One blog has a link to a $4.95 bumper sticker that says "Save Washingtonienne."

International public charity TechFoundation has announced the completion of a comprehensive, yearlong project to bring Internet and technology resources to the residents of Boston's Villa Victoria neighborhood, represented by Inquilinos Boricuas en Accion (IBA), a community-based organization in Boston's South End.

IBA is dedicated to empowering Villa Victoria's 3,000 predominantly Latino residents in 884 housing units by offering social services, education and arts programs.

A small quantum leap.

Northwestern University researchers have developed a new switching device that takes quantum communication to a new level. The device is a practical step toward creating a network that takes advantage of the mysterious and powerful world of quantum mechanics.

The researchers can route quantum bits, or entangled particles of light, at very high speeds along a shared network of fiber-optic cable without losing the entanglement information embedded in the quantum bits. The switch could be used toward achieving two goals of the information technology world: a quantum Internet, where encrypted information would be completely secure, and networking superfast quantum computers.

The device would enable a common transport mechanism, such as the ubiquitous fiber-optic infrastructure, to be shared among many users of quantum information. Such a system could route a quantum bit, such as a photon, to its final destination just like an e-mail is routed across the Internet today.

The research - a demonstration of the first all-optical switch suitable for single-photon quantum communications - is published by the journal Physical Review Letters.

"My goal is to make quantum communication devices very practical," said Prem Kumar, AT&T Professor of Information Technology in the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science and senior author of the paper. "We work in fiber optics so that as quantum communication matures it can easily be integrated into the existing telecommunication infrastructure."

The bits we all know through standard, or classical, communications only exist in one of two states, either "1" or "0." All classical information is encoded using these ones and zeros. What makes a quantum bit, or qubit, so attractive is it can be both one and zero simultaneously as well as being one or zero. Additionally, two or more qubits at different locations can be entangled - a mysterious connection that is not possible with ordinary bits.

Researchers need to build an infrastructure that can transport this "superposition and entanglement" (being one and zero simultaneously) for quantum communications and computing to succeed.

The qubit Kumar works with is the photon, a particle of light. A photonic quantum network will require switches that don't disturb the physical characteristics (superposition and entanglement properties) of the photons being transmitted, Kumar says. He and his team built an all-optical, fiber-based switch that does just that while operating at very high speeds.

To demonstrate their switch, the researchers first produced pairs of entangled photons using another device developed by Kumar, called an Entangled Photon Source. "Entangled" means that some physical characteristic (such as polarization as used in 3-D TV) of each pair of photons emitted by this device are inextricably linked. If one photon assumes one state, its mate assumes a corresponding state; this holds even if the two photons are hundreds of kilometers apart.

The researchers used pairs of polarization-entangled photons emitted into standard telecom-grade fiber. One photon of the pair was transmitted through the all-optical switch. Using single-photon detectors, the researchers found that the quantum state of the pair of photons was not disturbed; the encoded entanglement information was intact.

"Quantum communication can achieve things that are not possible with classical communication," said Kumar, director of Northwestern's Center for Photonic Communication and Computing. "This switch opens new doors for many applications, including distributed quantum processing where nodes of small-scale quantum processors are connected via quantum communication links."

19TH ANNUAL VOORHEES SUPPLY CHAIN CONFERENCE TO FEATURE INDUSTRY LEADERS APRIL 9.

It's no secret that supply chain efficiency and sustainability can make or break a company -- particularly in the nation's still fragile economy. That's why Iowa State University's College of Business will provide area business leaders the opportunity to learn about supply chain innovation from some proven experts at its 19th Annual Voorhees Supply Chain Conference -- also sponsored by John Deere, 3M and Boeing -- on Friday, April 8.

Held this year for the first time at ISU's Reiman Gardens, the event will begin at 8:15 a.m. with Todd Everett (left), vice president of operations, Newgistics Inc. -- an Austin, Texas-based third party logistics company specializing in small parcel delivery and return services for online retailers. He'll discuss "The E-tail Revolution," which will cover emerging supply chain trends and challenges in the rapidly growing internet retail industry.

An ISU College of Business graduate with a degree in transportation and logistics, Everett joined Newgistics in 2005 after spending the previous nine years with Intel Corp., where he had responsibility for the company's outsourced transportation and logistics functions for North and South America. He is now responsible for Newgistics' logistics network strategy, including transportation and national facility operations.

Anita Norian (right), worldwide vice president of the bioscience company Kemin Industries Inc. Des Moines, will be the speaker at 9:15 a.m. Her talk will focus on the company's innovation in meeting critical supply chain challenges, which include securing growers, ensuring appropriate farming standards and optimizing production. She will also discuss how Kemin addresses other difficult challenges and uncertainties, including the weather, yield variance and competing crop uses.

Prior to joining Kemin, Norian worked with DuPont and Pioneer in various roles, which included corporate strategy, investor relations, mergers and acquisitions, product development and marketing, as well as launching the financial competitive intelligence competency. An ISU College of Business graduate with degrees in both transportation and logistics, and accounting, she began her career in public accounting with McGladrey and Pullen, where she obtained her CPA and later completed her MBA.

Bill Stoufer (left), president of ConAgra Mills -- a Fortune 500 company headquartered in Omaha, Neb., that bills itself as "the leading source for quality grain ingredients" -- will be the 10:30 a.m. speaker. He will present information about transportation innovation-only events and how supply chain innovation wins with customers.

Stoufer has worked with ConAgra Foods -- ConAgra Mills' parent company -- for more than 20 years. He began in the company's logistics group and became manager of transportation in five years. He also held various responsibilities in sales before moving into the newly created position of vice president of supply chain in 2005. An ISU College of Business graduate with a degree in transportation and logistics, he was promoted to president last October.

Following lunch, David Salentine (right) -- supply chain manager for the film division, and the lean manager for the display and graphics division of 3M Co. in St. Paul, Minn.-- will be the final speaker at 12:30 p.m. with a talk titled "Supply Chain Innovations: We Must Think Differently."

Salentine is chair-elect of the internal Supply Chain Forum at 3M -- an innovation company with $27 billion in sales and about 80,000 employees worldwide -- and has more than 25 years of manufacturing and supply chain experience with the company. He interned with 3M in 1984 and joined full-time as an inventory accountant in 1985. His other roles with 3M have included senior materials control analyst, project leader for tape flags, warehouse general supervisor and global capacity manager, among others. Salentine assumed his current position in 2008.

Advance registration for the Voorhees Supply Chain Conference is $140 and includes all materials, speaker sessions and lunch. ISU students, faculty and staff may attend free, but must register. Students and faculty from other institutions may attend at the reduced cost of $25. The registration fee for walk-up attendees is $175 on the day of the conference.

South Korean regulator to strengthen WiBro.(POLICY)

The government of South Korea plans to increase investment to develop mobile Internet technology and offer more connections of high-speed wireless on the road, a Korea Times report said. The Korea Communications Commission (KCC) renewed its commitment for WiBro, a domestic mobile WiMAX variant. The KCC will work to deregulate the advertising market to provide a business foundation for new cable television channels to be licensed later in December 2010 and give improved broadcasting services like IPTV. To cater to rising demand for mobile Internet connectivity after sales of tablet computers, smartphones, and other gadgets soared, the KCC expected the carriers to increase Wi-Fi zones to 165,000 in 2011 from totally 66,000 in 2010. The KCC will support steps by software developers, telecommunications firms, and television and film studios to develop a stronger content ecosystem for mobile Internet devices.
