Prime Minister John Howard says he doesn't need the backing of the US in his comments
on the conviction of Anwar Ibrahim in Malaysia.

Malaysia Anwar Howard (Melbourne)

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD says he stands firm on his criticism of the verdict in Malaysia's
ANWAR IBRAHIM case.

Mr HOWARD questioned the independence of Malaysia's judiciary yesterday, saying it
seemed to be part of a political campaign against the former deputy prime minister.

Malaysia's legal affairs minister RAIS YATIM has reacted angrily to the comments, suggesting
Mr HOWARD should mind his own business.

Mr HOWARD says he made those remarks very carefully and very deliberately.

US vice president AL GORE has also entered the debate, branding the trial as a mockery
of justice.

MR HOWARD says he didn't make those comments because he thought AL GORE might agree
with him or not.

He says he made those comments deliberately as Prime Minister of Australia.
