NSW: Youth questioned over detonation of chemical explosive

Police say they're questioning a 16-year-old boy over the detonation of a chemical
explosive at a Newcastle shopping mall.

The device exploded inside a rubbish bin on Cowper Street outside Wallsend Plaza, in the
city's west, around 2.30pm (AEST) yesterday.

Despite there being a large number of shoppers in the area, only several were treated
briefly by ambulance officers at the scene after inhaling acidic fumes.

It's believed those responsible accessed information on bomb making from the Internet.

A police spokesman says detectives are interviewing one boy in custody over the incident,
and it's possible others were involved.
