NT: Health, energy key priorities for Martin at COAG

Northern Territory Chief Minister CLARE MARTIN will push for a stronger national energypolicy and a better health deal at Friday's Council of Australian Governments meeting.

The Territory wants to become Australia's next major gas hub, with work underway fora $1.5 billion Liquified Natural Gas plant in Darwin.

Ms MARTIN says gas is the key to the territory's economic growth and can provide Australiawith a long-term environmentally-sustainable energy source.

Ms MARTIN is expected to join other leaders in pushing for an increase in the federalgovernment's proposed five-year health funding package.

Previously she has said the package would leave the NT $16 million worse off over thenext five years.

Health Minister KAY PATTERSON has named the ACT as the first of the states and territoriesto reach agreement with the Commonwealth over the public hospital funding deal.
